PS, I Luv U2

I'll be thinking of you all next week while on vacation in Palm Springs. Looking forward to visiting old friends and family there. Don't worry, I'll be back in time for voting on Super Tuesday!

*** Click on the post title for U2 "Where the Streets Have No Name" filmed at Slane Castle in Ireland. The city of Desert Hot Springs (NW of Palm Springs) is known as the town where the streets have no name. The song appeared on The Joshua Tree album. Joshua Tree CA is NE of Palm Springs. ***

Is this the first image that comes to your mind when you think of Palm Springs? It is mine! It's Palm Canyon, one of four such canyons that wind up into the mountains behind Palm Springs, on Agua Caliente Indian land. I hope to spend an afternoon hiking around there on our trip this week.

This is a Palm Cyn wild palm grove. Birds, bugs lizards and snakes are often heard rustling around in the dry skirts. While hiking the Palm Cyn trail 30-yrs ago, I almost stepped on a large rattlesnake, coiled & agitated. Quick thinking & fast leaping reflexes saved the day then. Hope I don't see any this trip!

Having lived there for 5+years, there are many images engraved in my mind, like these roadside dinosaur attractions. They are located alongside the highway heading from LA to PS. Hello, Brontie & T-Rexie, did'ja miss me?

Another favorite icon is the Pink Elephant Car Wash. Periodically some city beautification project (or neighborhood gestapo group) will try to have it removed as an old eyesore, not befitting the manicured ambiance they want associated with Palm Springs. So far, the residents, for whom this is a beloved landmark, have prevailed. The Pink Elephant was one of my guideposts. I related everything to how far it was from the Pink Elephant: What, too kitchshy? Oh well, if you want the more traditional glitzy Palm Springs photos, click here. Personally, I can do without all the golf courses and celebrities, but the wind farm pics are pretty cool.

OK, now here is a REAL treat. Part of the fun of visiting old friends is pulling out the old photo albums -- you know, from back in the dark ages before digital. I thought I'd share a few. Some of these are hilarious. Being much enamored of Bruce Lee, I & the friend I will be visiting once took Kung-Fu lessons. One night, after class, we stopped by one of those instant five-and-dime photo places and took these pictures of us in our most fierce Kung-Fu poses.

D.K., age 19:
35-yrs later, I still remember being disgusted that we got ripped off for one picture, relaxing my pose, when POP, I was caught looking like some stoner. I swear, it was still early that night! These are au natural, no make-up, no eyebrows, don't laugh, or I'll be forced to use a Tiger Paw on you!

My P.S. friend, L.S.:

I can't wait to torture L.S. with these pix!
I think this is the White Crane pose?

A year later, some "friends" convinced me to darken my hair, telling me I would look like Cher with all my eye make-up on. Cher with acne? Again, laughter will not be tolerated. Sheesh, 20-yr olds can be talked into just about ANYTHING!

Sorry about the pic quality; I think you can click ea one to enlarge.

Sunrise or Sunset? ............................... hasta proxima semana!

Bloody hell, I was coming over to have a look then all of a sudden your site just bounced up. The pix are very interesting, though the poses look rather dangerous and confronting. I didn’t know anyone ever kept photos out of those machines.
So where do I address the mail?

Enigma:
I had fun with it. Cher would've probably had plastic surgery for acne! Wow, the time I wasted on all that make-up. I might be a PhD today if I'd spent that time on my education.

Cart:
I didn't even know I'd kept those photos, until I opened up an old sealed memory box, prepping for my trip. I was cracking up, what FIERCE confrontational faces we had! I'm afraid I'll be out of touch on vacation, no bloggin'.

Cartledge said...

Sorry, I was a bit obscure there. How do you send mail to a place where the streets have no names. Wouldn't mind living there myself.

D.K. Raed said...

Hah, you got me, Cartledge! Perhaps they would be sent on the wind, picked up by a passing eagle & dropped down the chimney. BTW, I think most DHS streets DO have names, but the area still has some lonely outposts, far from civilization, back o'beyond.

A blast from the past! These pictures remind me of high school days, where although never publicly stated, my philosophy was clearly *there is no such thing as too much blue eyeshadow*.
The Kung Fu shots were hillarious- was the Kung Fu song popular at the time?
Palm Springs looks beautiful. I have never been there-- but have been further west, In the San Diego area.

DK, what great pics! I hope you enjoy your mini-vacation, and we'll see you in a bit.

Woooo Hoooo!! Were you a HOTTIE or what?

enigma4ever said...

AHA!!! we now have proof....Tomcat you were indeed a CHER man...I knew it ;-)

[see I told you they were great pics DK...]]

Fran:
I can't believe I wore that much eye make-up (for me, all brown & green eye shadow)! In my defense, I wore NO face make-up (still don't), just a little blush. I know the Kung-Fu song, but I think it came out afterwards. My inspiration was Bruce Lee.

Tomcat:
A hottie?!? Oh, past-tense, hrumphhh! Well, maybe if I could afford all the plastic surgery Cher has had ...

Enigma:
I think you're right, there must still be a Cher soft-spot in the old tomcat ... though personally, I always thought I looked more like Carol Burnett.

Cartledge said...

Well now I know why Tomcat... HOTTIE!!! I just think those things, never had the tomcatishness to say it :)

So, like, when were these pictures taken? 1992? '02? Oh, sorry, I KNOW they're not that old...I was just being facetious.

Have a great vacation, D.K. What you're partaking in the days ahead give life its true meaning!! Much fun to you and e.k. in your reunification with old friends.

Hurry back!

Cartledge:
It's OK, you can only be who you are. I am usually very chinzy with the compliments myself. But of course, most people don't mind honest compliments so much. It's the honest criticism that doesn't get equal reception. go figure.

Dada:
Hah! yes, they were taken in 1902 by my kung-fu great-grandma! heheee! I WILL hurry back cuz our votes on Feb 5 are surely needed here in red UT. Also I will miss youse guys too much!

Cartledge said...

OMG, I know how a throw away, over the top compliment works - but I only use them sparingly :) tomcat does it so smoothly I'm impressed. Maybe I'm impressed he can do it so easily.
But I have to say, just the memory of those years was a sort of retardant. The pix were really evocative of the times.

D.K. Raed said...

Cartledge:
sorry about the retardant on the fire. my memories are mostly good. being a later bloomer, those were the years I came out of my shell. shyness may not be terminal, but it sure puts a damper on joy. the old pix are good reminders of how far we've all journeyed, and of all the ones who didn't make it this far. this thing called life, eh?

Cartledge said...

"reminders of how far we've all journeyed, and of all the ones who didn't make it this far."
So true. However I still remember, bearing in mind those who didn't make it, there are memories of more caring times.
The great part is the joy aspect never diminishes.

Hey D.K. I loved the photos and hope you're having a wonderful vacation (without too much rain).

Sing with me:
Everybody was Kung Fu fighting
Those kids were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit frightening
But they fought with expert timing

testing ...

Cartledge said...

Is it a bit quiet there?

D.K. Raed said...

Cart: well, yes it is quiet. just drove 10-hrs back home. thought I had a good idea how to correct a comment problem I'm having. obviously not. if you or others have any ideas, leave 'em here & I'll look 'em over in the AM (I'm crashing now, down for the count).

Here is the problem: just before we left on vacation, I noticed new comments were not being emailed to me. They always were before. I'm a real blogger novice. I was hoping it was a blogger problem & would be solved by the time I returned. Nope! I looked at Blogger Help just now & saw others have had this problem but that blogger says they corrected it in December. I went back & checked all my settings. I tried a few other tricks now. no luck ...

TomCat said...

DK, you are probably still a hottie, but I don't remember seeing a recent pic over which to drool. ;-)

D.K. Raed said...

oh tomcat, you obviously missed my family pic blogged just before xmas. It was a post about Xmas Dolls. and believe me, it was NOTHING to drool over!

TomCat said...

Did a search and found it...

Hottie Alert!!

D.K. Raed said...

Tomcat, you are incorrigible!
