This is not what I do ...

Before we head off to see the wizard this evening, I thought I'd share an unexpected musical find. First, as you probably already know, there are 4,000 events being held all over the U.S. tonight for Barack Obama. Click here to enter your zipcode & find an event near you. I'm not sure what to expect since we don't tend to attract a lot of Democrats here in SW UT. I hope I'm pleasantly surprised. I'll let you know tomorrow how our local event went.

But to continue with the musical find .... I certainly never expected to be grabbed by a snip of a song in Shrek the Third. But there I was this afternoon, lazing on the couch, wondering why I was wasting my time watching this third film in the Shrek saga. Ever since the Godfather III, I've learned to stay away from any third sequel. But just then, my ears were arrested by a mournful piano and my breath was taken away by an intimate voice ....

It's called "Nine Crimes" by Damien Rice, an Irish folksinger I was unfamiliar with. Here it is, see if you agree. (note: I found it easier to understand the lyrics after Damien appears & sings).

Click here if you'd like to see the solo guitar version.

If you liked those, you might also like Damien Rice's "The Blower's Daughter" which was part of the soundtrack for the film, "Closer":

Yes, Utah Savage, a gun is involved in "Nine Crimes". In fact, I think the whole song kind of fits your fictional collection.

My daughter turned me on to Damien Rice not long ago. He's amazing.

Diva, it seems some people find him dark, but for me, Damien Rice connects on an emotional level. That does not happen too often. I need to listen to more of him. I wonder where or how your daughter came across him.

There is a musical piece in the Shrek 1 film that I love, I am a huge Shrek fan.

Love the sarcastic humor-- two things donkey- shut
up!

That is sweet music. I was not familiar w Damien Rice till now.

Fran, oooh is it the Hallelujah piece from Shrek I? I don't know who sang it for the movie, but it wasn't Leonard Cohen.

Yup, that donkey makes the shrek movies for me. This 3rd one wasn't as good, but I guess there's always hope for a 4th!

My daughter used to work for an independent radio station in Chicago, WXRT - it is a great station, or was - at any rate, she's always been on top of new and unusual musical talent.

Funny Shrek story: in 2004, I was going with a bunch of friends to Australia for a camping trip in the Outback - I mean far Outback, with an Aboriginal Elder. On every flight we were on, the movie was Shrek 2. "Are we there yet?" Anyway, there was a huge Corobboree going on - Aboriginals from the Top End and the Western Territory were having a big meeting about land management and autonomy - and one evening, after the day's meetings were ended, they showed a movie. It was Shrek 2. And they all just sat there, all 200 + Aboriginies, thinking "these white fellas are out of their minds."

Diva, I am shaking my head thinking of the Abo's watching a big green guy with earstalks, a smart-alec donkey & a sword-wielding conquistador-cat while THEY were trying to get serious about land mgmt. I think that was the one with the Fairy Godmother & Prince Charming, too. WHO selected the entertainment for that event -- if there was EVER a reason for rejecting typical western culture, that was it. We are a big fairytale! And I say that with extreme love in my heart for Shrek.

I didn't know about that so thanks. I guess I'm lost in a cause! I will check out my area and the videos so thanks again!

Very interesting! Loved the first video and the song better than the other version. The second song though was really good.
I will have to look some more. I did see where you could host a meeting but I will have to go back to see about my area. That is starting to sound familiar now.

"My name is Poooosss. And I look good in Booootsss."

Aborigine, he thinking "What kind of a messed up cat is this?"

I'm going to have to listen to this tomorrow.. AND figure out the suggestion you had for recording a part for the 'accent' post. If we could figure out how to do it, perhaps we can all read the same thing but then hear the different accents by just reading the same text or poem (the rain in spain has been taken, SORRY [g])..do you have any suggestions? We had visitors today and I won't have my own time to listen to these songs until tomorrow..
interesting finds when you surf the web..

Avg Pat:
I actually liked the 2nd version better, but the video sucked, so I didn't embed it. I found the woman's voice in the 1st one too hard for me to understand (but the visuals were great). The Obama Unite for Change events took place all over the U.S. this Saturday, so you missed out, Jim. But never fear, I'm sure there will be many more in the future!

Diva:
I notice a bit of blond stereotyping in this Shrek movie. Prince Charming is blond & evilly stupid (or stupidly evil). Rapunzel is a blond traitor. Cinderella is a blond airhead. Arthur is a blond loser. I'm detecting a pattern. Should we petition DreamWorks about it? Or is it, like umm alright, oh, la-dee-dah, with you?

Ingrid:
I do not have a clue HOW to do a digital blog embed w/voice. I know it can be done, though, because my niece does it on her blog. Unfortunately, she is in the middle of moving now so I can't really bug her about it. I think Robert Rouse did a voice recording once, too, but my computer only incompletely accesses his blog (Left of Centrist). Now, as far as what to say if we can ever figure out how to do it, I'm thinking various lines of Edgar A. Poe, "The Raven"!

La, de, da. I don't have time to petition, I'm too busy with my newly adopted actor.

Diva: you always pick the best actor fantasymen! I was just watching Sean Bean today & thinking, oh, he'll do! But now that you've forced me to pass along the Arte y Pico, the actors will have to wait awhile.

EProf: Thanks! I really saw this award first on your blog, so am thinking of you as the original culprit -- ground zero, so to speak.

Enigma: Glad you like Mr. Rice (I was afraid he was a little too moody, but he was just what I was in the mood for). You have an award, too, another one for your mantle!

Ingrid: well if D.C. inspires a solution to the blog voice conundrum, then it will probably be the best thing to come out of there in awhile! "The Raven" just happens to be a favorite of mine. Saw John Astin (the original TV Gomez Addams) do a KILLER version in a one-man play in San Diego a few yrs ago. Mwuaaa-aaa-aahhhh ...
